GSP Doesn’t Believe A Fight With Conor McGregor Would Do Much For His Legacy

GSP and Conor Mcgregor

Right now it’s unclear if former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion Georges St-Pierre will ever fight again, though some have speculated that a superfight with Conor McGregor could be enough to lure him back into the Octagon.

However, speaking on Monday’s episode of ‘The MMA Hour,’ GSP suggested that a fight with McGregor doesn’t excite him as much as people may be thinking.

“The thing is, Conor McGregor, money-wise, I believe is the one that can put the most money on the table,” St-Pierre told MMAfighting’s Ariel Helwani. “However, I think legacy-wise, I don’t think he’s the guy that legacy-wise (helps me much).

“I mean, money-wise, for people who are not huge fans of MMA, they know who Conor McGregor is. He’s the main guy,” he continued. “He’s the guy who brought the sport to a different level. He’s, I would say, the most charismatic guy. He sells, the biggest seller in the sport. But talk about legacy. If I come back for legacy, that’s what interests me the most, more than the money.

“Money, yes, it’s good, but if I come back, it would be more for a legacy match.”

interestingly, GSP also seemed dismissive of other potential opponents that were suggested to him, including Tyron Woodley, Nate diaz and Ben Askren, leaving a big question mark over what he would consider to be a fight that would be worth returning for.

Whatever happens, it seems that the Canadian star is in no rush to return to the UFC as he’s still on medication to deal with ulcerative colitis, which he was diagnosed with after his 185lb title win against Michael Bisping last year.

“I need to wait for my condition, to see where my weight will be at and where my health will be at,” St-Pierre said. “I’m still on medication right now, so I can’t fight right now, as we (said), because I’m sure if I go back, even if I start feeling better, if I go back to fighting with the stress and everything, bang, I will probably go right back into it (feeling sick). So I need to wait a little bit, see how it feels. (I need) to be stable for a longer period of time.

“I’ve not closed the door (on my career),” St-Pierre continued. “And also, I will have to think about what weight (I return at), at 185, 170, 155, what would be the weight. I’ve won the title at 170 many times. Doesn’t mean I cannot go back and try to go for the title, but for me, now that I’m at the end of my career, if I do something, it needs to be something that excites me, something that is a win-win situation that can elevate me. I’ve said it many times. I know I repeat myself, but it’s the truth.”
