USADA have announced that UFC strawweight fighter Cynthia Calvillo has accepted a six month suspension from the sport after testing positive for marijuana metabolites last year.
Drug testing agencies have become more lenient when it comes to marijuana in recent times, but the 30-year-old Calvillo still managed to come in over USADA’s limit of 180 ng/mL during an in-competition test on the night of her unanimous decision loss to Carla Esparza at UFC 219 on December 30th.
The suspension began on the night she failed the test in December and Calvillo could reduce her sentence to just 3 months if she agrees to undertake a drug awareness and management program, although due to the fact that she fought in Las Vegas, its still possible that she could be further punished by The Nevada State Athletic Commission as well.
Up until UFC 219, Calvillo had been enjoying a terrific start to her time in the Octagon in 2017, racking up three wins in a row to go 6-0 in the promotion.
So much so in fact that even UFC president Dana White was touting her as a future star of the sport, but some of the steam has been taken out of that particular hype train after she failed to continue her winning streak against Esparza.
