In recent days a rumor about a modified rules fight in the UFC between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor from a journalist in Dubai has been gaining traction, but Dana White has now spoken out to confirm that it’s not true.
In a series of Twitter posts at the weekend, Omar Al Raisi, editor-in-chief of The Sports Journal had claimed that the two superstars would fight in the Octagon, but to all intents and purposes it would essentially be a boxing match with 4 ounce gloves in the Octagon.
“@FloydMayweather will fight @TheNotoriousMMA in the octagon,” Al Raisi wrote, “With 4 ounce gloves, no shoes, 5-five minute rounds in 155 division.
No kicks, no take downs, no elbows, no knees. Certain things will be allowed like the clinch.
“Co-promoted by Mayweather Promotions, UFC and McGregor Entertainment.
Last time I said McGregor will be a co-promoter, no body believed me. But again this is the right game, sources say things, but it changes very quickly.”
when Al Raisi’s claims were met with some skepticism he issued a response claiming that nothing was finalized yet.
“Let me clarify. Nothing is approved or signed. The modified rules MMA fight is something that has been discussed.
No one has an interest for another boxing bout & we all know Floyd won’t jump into a full MMA fight.
Modified rules generates interest and Conor has better chances.”
However, White has now shot down Al Raisi’s so-called insider information.
“None of that is even close to true,” White wrote on Twitter. “Dumbest shit i have ever heard.”
