UFC hall-of-famer Stephan Bonnar was arrested on Sunday driving while under the influence in Las Vegas.
Bonnar was reportedly driving recklessly on the I-15 in the city at 1.15pm on Sunday afternoon in a red Cadillac CTS.
Witnesses reported that Bonnar was driving over 90mph while veering erratically between lanes, until he was eventually surrounded by other citizens and forced to stop.
The allegedly incoherent Bonnar was then reportedly physically restrained by onlookers until the police arrived, at which point the former UFC light-heavyweight initially resisted arrest until handcuffs were finally placed on him and he was taken to a local jail.
“The Trooper reported smelling the odor of an unknown alcoholic beverage emitting from the driver and displaying signs of intoxication,” and official report reads. “Medical staff responded to the scene and determined nothing medically was abnormal with the driver.”
Bonnar has since been charged with felony DUI as well as resisting arrest and unsafe starting or movement of a stopped vehicle.
It has since emerged that this is actually Bonnar’s third DUI charge.
The 41-year-old Bonnar rose to prominence in the UFC after becoming one of the finalists on the first ever series of The Ultimate Fighter, leading to a classic slugfest with Forrest Griffin at the show’s finale that has gone down as one of the most important fights in the history of the company.
While he fought for the UFC many times over the years, Bonnar never reached the same heights again in his career, but nontheless that one fight ensured his place in the UFC’s Hall Of Fame due to it’s significance in aiding the growth of the UFC and MMA as a whole at a pivotal moment in the company’s history.
Bonnar last fought for the UFC in 2012, stepping in as a late replacement to fight Anderson Silva, but what appeared to be a big opportunity for ‘The American Psycho’ proved to be somewhat of a disaster as he was TKO’d in the first round and then later tested positive for steroids.
That was the second time in Bonnar’s career that he’d tested positive for steroids and led to a falling out with Dana White and the fighter announcing his retirement.
However, Bonnar did return in 2014 to fight Tito Ortiz in the Bellator promotion, losing out by split decision in what would prove to be his last ever fight. He has since been performing in pro-wrestling.
