Two division champion Amanda Nunes has slammed the door shut on a rematch with Cris Cyborg by ruling out the possibility of fighting at featherweight again.
“Sorry Cristiane but I’m done with 145,” Nunes wrote on Twitter. “My Goal was to be a double champ. But, now I can help you build the division. I got someone for you @Judo_Kayla is a true 145er.”
Nunes is referring to Kayla Harrison, a former two-time Olympic Judo gold medalist who is currently 3-0 in her fledgling MMA career.
She could certainly be a potentially challenger at 145lbs in the future, but for now Cyborg is likely to be hugely disappointed by the prospect of never having the chance to avenge her shock 51 seconds knockout defeat against Nunes at UFC 232 in December.
While she may still hope she can change Nunes’ mind, it seems that the double champ’s next big goal would make it even less likely that she’ll be making a return trip to featherweight anytime soon.
“OKAY GUYS I’M DONE PLAYING. IM REALLY PLANNING ON GOING DOWN TO FIGHT FOR THE 125 BELT,” Nunes wrote.
Becoming a triple-champion would certainly be a unique accomplishment, although she’s not the only figher vying for that accolade, with bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw also indicating this week that if he defeats Henry Cejudo to claim the flyweight title on Saturday night then he wants to move up to featherweight to fight Max Holloway.
