A welterweight fight between Leon Edwards and Gunnar Nelson is set to serve as the co-main event at UFC On ESPN+ 5 in London, England on March 16th.
Edwards had been quietly compiling an impressive record in the division for a couple of years, racking up five wins in a row over the likes of Albert Tumenov, Bryan Barberena and Peter Sobotta.
However, he then threw himself into the spotlight when he earned a unanimous decision victory over Donald Cerrone back in June of last year in his first ever headlining spot for the promotion in Singapore.
Now the 27-year-old lands the co-main event in London as he attempts to further rise up from his current position at No.10 in the 170lb rankings.
To do so he’ll have to defeat Nelson, who is coming off a submission victory over Alex Oliveira in December.
That was Nelson’s first fight in well over a year, having been KO’d by Santiago Ponzinibbio prior to that. However, with previous wins over Albert Tumenov and Alan Jouban, Nelson still holds the No.12 spot in the rankings and will be eager to move back into the top 10 with a win over Edwards.
Edwards Vs Nelson will serve as the lead-in to the main event featuring Darren Till Vs Jorge Masvidal on the UFC On ESPN+ 5 card.
