Colby Covington Vs Robbie Lawler In The Works For UFC On ESPN 5

A major welterweight fight between Colby Covington and Robbie Lawler has been verbally agreed for UFC On ESPN 5 in Newark, New Jersey on August 3rd.

This isn’t the fight Covington was originally looking for as Dana White had previously indicated that the former interim champion would fight for the title next against newly crowned champion Kamaru Usman.

With six wins in a row, including victories over the likes of Dong Hyun Kim, Damien Maia and Rafael dos Anjos, Covington certainly has an impressive track record to help secure that spot, but plans have changed and ‘Chaos’ is content to now fight Lawler, who he’s described as “a living legend.”

Lawler, who is a former training partner of Covington’s, is currently on a two-fight losing streak, having lost by unanimous decision to Rafael dos Anjos followed by a somewhat controversial first round submission loss to Ben Askren last time out.

Prior to that Lawler had won six of his last seven fights though, including becoming welterweight champion with two successful defenses under his belt, defeating the likes of Johny Hendricks, Rory MacDonald, Donald Cerrone and Carlos Condit along the way.

Covington Vs Lawler will now take main event honors at UFC On ESPN 5.
