Former heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier is about to call time on his decorated MMA career, but not before having one last trilogy fight with the man who snatched the title back from him recently, Stipe Miocic.
“I’m going to fight this guy again, and my intention is to fight him in the right way,” Cormier told Ariel Helwani on Monday.
“But I’ll go fight him again, (and) win or lose, I’m not fighting again. This will be the only time I ever step foot in the Octagon again.”
As for their previous fight, DC acknowledges that Miocic’s late change in gameplan to work to the body was well executed, but he feels he can make the neccessary adjustments to ensure he emerges victorious in their third encounter.
“That was just great work by him. It goes to the fighting mindset and the ability of Stipe Miocic,” Cormier said. “He went hard body shot. And the one that hurt me, instead of chasing that again, he went up top.
“I’m not saying I can just go grab Stipe Miocic and throw him down at will, but I can do a lot of things better than I did on August 17.”
There’s already talk that the Cormier vs. Miocic fights could go down as the best trilogy in heavyweight history, and that’s something that DC is definitely aiming for.
“A true heavyweight rivalry will carry a sport, and I think right now we have that with Stipe and I. I intend to go back and get the job done and fight the way I train to fight.”
