A welterweight fight between Rafael dos Anjos an Michael Chiesa has been targeted for the UFC Fight Night 166 event in Raleigh, North Carolina on January 25th.
Former lightweight champion RDA has been finding the going tough at 170lbs recently, having lost three of his past four fights in the division.
In fairness though he’s been fighting a series of top contenders, starting with an unsuccessful attempt to win the interim title against Colby Covington, which he lost by unanimous decision.
Then he moved straight into a fight with the man who would soon become the welterweight titleholder, Kamaru Usman, who also beat him on the scorecards.
A submission win over Kevin Lee got dos Anjos back on track, but he’s since dropped another unanimous decision verdict against Leon Edwards, though he still retains the No.5 spot on the welterweight rankings.
As for Chiesa, he’s another former lightweight who has been making his mark at welterweight since moving up at the tail-end of last year.
So far he’s earned a submission victory over Carlos Condit and followed that up with a convincing unanimous decision win against Diego Sanchez, and getting the better of RDA would be his ticket to a spot on the welterweight rankings.
RDA vs. Chiesa joins a UFC Fight Night 166 card that will be headlined by Junior dos Santos vs. Curtis Blaydes.
