Weili Zhang’s first strawweight title defence will come against former champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 248 at a destination still to be confirmed on March 7th.
Zhang comes into the fight after having seized the title from Jessica Andrade with a 42 second TKO victory back in August in her homeland of China.
That was the 30-year-old Zhang’s fourth win in a row since joining the UFC last year, with her other wins to date being against Danielle Taylor, Jessica Aguilar and Tecia Torres.
Even more impressively, aside from her first ever pro-fight, Zhang has never tasted defeat, leaving her current winning streak at 20 fights heading into this title clash.
As for Jedrzejczyk, she comes into the fight off a unanimous decision victory over Michelle Waterson back in October.
Only a couple of years ago the Polish star held an unbeaten 14-0 record and had successfully defended her title five times against a string of top-flight competition.
However, she’s had a more turbulent time since then, starting with back-to-back losses to Rose Namajunas, then a win over Tecia Torres, followed by a decision loss against Valentina Shevchenko after moving up to challenge for the flyweight title.
That made it clear that 115lbs is the optimal division for Jedrzejczyk and she quickly finds herself in another title match-up, which is so far the only fight currently attached to the UFC 248 line-up.
