Frankie Edgar will finally make his bantamweight debut on July 11th against Pedro Munhoz at UFC 251.
The former lightweight champion had been plying his trade at featherweight for some time, but after an unsuccessful attempt to take the title last year he floated a plan to drop down another division to bantamweight.
However, though he was at one point scheduled to fight Cory Sandhagen in his 135lb debut, ‘The Answer’ then stepped away from that match-up in order to take a short notice fight with Chan Sung Jung at 145lbs instead, which proved to be an ill-advised decision given that he was TKO’d in the first round.
Now he returns to his original idea of dropping down a division and will face Munhoz, who is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Aljamain Sterling back in June of last year.
That was one of only two losses Munhoz has suffered in his past nine Octagon outings however, having defeated the likes of Cody Garbrandt, Bryan Caraway and Rob Font along the way.
Edgar vs. Munhoz joins a UFC 251 card that currently doesn’t have a main event, but is rumored to potentially feature a featherweight title rematch between Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway.
