A decade ago UFC On ESPN 14 opponents Alexander Gustafsson and Fabricio Werdum had a sparring session together, but it seems the two fighter’s recollection of exactly what happened differs.
It all began when a heavyweight fight between the two was first announced, and Werdum boasted that he had broken Gustafsson’s nose during what was clearly an intense sparring situation.
However, During a pre-fight media scrum yesterday, Former light-heavyweight title contender Gustafsson claimed that it was in fact he who broke Werdum’s nose.
“No he hasn’t broken my nose. I broke his nose,” Gustafsson told a reporter.
“We had a good spar. I went all in, him and me and it was a good sparring. I don’t remember who I was fighting back then, but I was in camp, he was in camp for a fight, but make history short, I beat him in that sparring session. I beat him bad.”
The media later had a chance to speak to former heavyweight champ Werdum, who had a different version of events.
“I think he made that part up – It was cut but there wasn’t a broken nose,” Werdum said through a translator. “They were training at Mark Munoz’s gym, he saw Gustafsson and Travis Browne, offered himself to go train with them, you know, basically training against both of them at the same time. So, many rounds and (laughs) they set him up.”
