A welterweight title fight between Kamaru Usman and Gilbert Burns has now been rescheduled for UFC 258 on February 13th at a destination still to be confirmed.
The UFC has already attempted to put on this fight twice in the past six months, with Burns first being brought in to fight Usman in July, only to then have to bow out due to testing positive for Covid-19.
The UFC then appeared to be targeting a December showdown between the two, but that also fell through and so they’ll now be hoping the fight can hold together at a third attempt.
When the first fight fell through Usman did still manage to compete at UFC 251, with Jorge Masvidal stepping in on short notice, and it proved to be a good night for ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’, who convincingly won by unanimous decision.
That was Usman’s second successful defense of the title and leaves the former TUF winner on an impressive 16-fight winning streak, 12 of which have come inside the UFC’s Octagon.
Meanwhile, Burns has also been on a strong run, putting together a six fight winning streak that includes wins over the likes of Gunnar Nelson, Demian Maia and most recently former champion Tyron Woodley on his way to a title shot.
Usman vs. Burns looks set to be the main event for UFC 258, which will also feature Chris Weidman vs. Uriah Hall and Kelvin Gastelum vs. Ian Heinisch.
