Former bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt’s will headline UFC Fight Night 190 against Rob Font on May 22nd.
Back in 2016, Garbrandt appeared to be on top of the world as he dethroned Dominick Cruz to become the UFC’s bantamweight champion, but he fell on hard times afterwards, suffering three losses in a row, including being both KO’d and TKO’d in successive fights by his rival TJ Dillashaw and then a further TKO defeat against Pedro Munhoz.
Garbrandt did rebound last year though with a KO victory against Raphael Assuncao, but the injury and ailment prone fighter then tested positive for Covid-19 and has since had to postponed his return to action due to continuing to suffer from the affects of the disease for several months.
Now the 29-year-old feels ready to return and will go up against the 33-year-old Font, who is on a three-fight winning streak, albeit one that’s spread out over a three-year period.
Those were all good wins though, starting with decision wins over Sergio and Ricky Simon, before going on to TKO Marlon Moraes last time out.
As such, Font has risen as high as No.3 in the bantamweight rankings, just once spot above Garbrandt.
Garbrandt vs. Font fronts a developing UFC Fight Night 190 card that will also feature Carla Esparza vs. Yan Xiaonan.
