Following last night’s UFC On ABC 2 event the recipients of the evening’s $50,000 bonus awards were announced.
Earning ‘Fight Of The Night’ honors was a middleweight scrap between Julian Marquez and Sam Alvey, which saw both men swinging heavy leather in search of a finish.
Alvey had his moments, but for the most part Marquez proved to be the faster and more accurate of the two though and in the second round that really started to pay off for him, with a right hook leaving Alvey on wobbled legs, while a flurry of follow-up strikes led to a left hand that sent him to his knees.
Alvey tried in vain to go for a takedown, but Marquez grabbed hold of his neck and applied a rear-naked choke that would render him unconscious before he had a chance to tap out.
One of two ‘Performance Of The Night’ awards went to Mackenzie Dern, who should some willingess to strike with Nina Nunes (aka Nina Ansaroff) in the opening round, but was using that mainly to set up opportunities to bring the fight to the mat.
She was able to do just that, and then put her world-class jiu-jitsu to good use as she patiently worked on an armbar attempt, finally securing it late in the round.
Also picking up a performance bonus was Mateusz Gamrot, who KO’d Scott Holtzman early in the second round, initially dropping him with a one-two before follow-up strikes on the mat sealed the deal.
