Dana White has revealed that welterweight champion Kamaru Usman’s next fight will be a rematch with Colby Covington.
That’s the word according to Yahoo! Sports Kevin Iole after talking directly to Dana White on Instagram Live yesterday.
It’s good to see this match-up is in the works as it’s clearly the fight to make, and realistically should have been made instead of the Jorge Masvidal rematch at UFC 261 back in April.
The reason for that is obvious for anyone who witnessed the first clash between Usman and Covington back in December of 2019 as it was a an all-action back-and-forth battle that went all the way to the final minute of the fifth round before ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ finally stopped the challenger via TKO, leaving him with a broken jaw.
Since then Usman has gone on to defend his title a further three times, including twice against Masvidal and once against Gilbert Burns. As such, With an overall 19-1 record and holding down the No.2 spot on the UFC’s pound-for-pound list, Usman is now moving into the realm of being one of the all-time greats in the sport.
As for Covington, he’s not been as active as Usman in recent times, but he did get back to winning ways with a fifth round TKO victory over former champion Tyron Woodley in a fight he dominated back in September of last year, and currently holds the No.1 contender spot at 170lbs.
At this stage there’s no confirmation on when and where the title rematch will be taking place, but when it is announced it’s certain to become one of the most eagerly anticipated fights of the year.
