The sixth week of the latest season of Dana White’s Contender Series ended with four fighters being awarded UFC contracts.
Mike Malott, a striking coach at Team Alpha-Male, wasted no time securing himself a UFC contract last night, seizing on a guillotine choke to deliver a 39 second finish of Shimon Somtritsky in the main event.
The co-main event was completely different, going the full three rounds with both men having their moments. Daniel Barez had notable success with takedown over the course of the fight, but Carlos Hernandez built up a solid lead in terms of significant strikes on the feet and that ultimately helped him to a split decision victory (29-28 x3) and a place on the UFC roster.
Fernie Gracie was able to TKO Josh Weems mid-way through the opening round with a big right hook followed by ground-and-pound strikes.
Meanwhile, Joseph Holmes secured a second round rear-naked choke submission finish over Shonte Barnes, but was the only winne ron the night not to earn a UFC contract. It wasn’t all bad news though as Dana White later revealed that Holmes had previously accepted a fight with Fury FC in November and that it would be filmed for Dana White’s other show, ‘Lookin’ For A Fight’.
In the opening fight of the night, Genaro Valdez earned his spot in the promotion with a TKO finish of Patrik White early in the second round with a series of hooks after a highly competitive stand-up scrap in the opening five minutes.
