Nate Diaz has made it clear that he wants to fight Dustin Poirier next, and it seems he wants it to go down as soon as possible.
“I’ll fight Dp in January don’t be a scared lil b*tch this time now or never,” Diaz wrote on Twitter.
After his submission loss to lightweight champion Charles Oliveira on Saturday night, Poirier had seemed uncertain about what the future holds and had questioned whether he wanted to keep fighting, stating at the post-fight presser, “Do I want to do go down the road again? That answer will come in next couple days or weeks.”
It seems the answer has come quickly as after being informed of Diaz’s call-out he told MMAfighting.com via text message that, “I’m in.”
Poirier then went on social media to confirm it.
“I’ll fight you this month,” Poirier informed Diaz.
With the UFC’s final card of the year coming this Saturday night though, Diaz wasn’t buying it.
“Ur full of sh*t,” Diaz replied.
“Nathaniel?” Poirier questioned when Diaz went quiet.
“I’m serious bro,” Poirier wrote, but Diaz didn’t bite.
So this is a bit of a weird one all round as it was always a big ask to try to get Poirier to fight on a month’s notice less than a week after his title shot disappointment, while ‘The Diamond’s’ counter-offer was very much tongue-in-cheek given that it’d be almost impossible to get it done in a matter of days before the final event of the year this weekend, not to mention the fact that he is on medical suspension until January 11th!
It is still possible that the two could fight in January, but if nothing else, what this Twitter spat did appear to reveal is that talk of Poirier possibly retiring may well have been premature.
