Immediately following a TKO loss in his featherweight title challenge against Alexander Volkanovski last month, ‘The Korean Zombie’ Chan Sung Jung had indicated that it might be time to retire, but after having had time to reflect he’s come to the decision to have at least one more fight.
““Perhaps I’m old, maybe I’m not good enough, so my goal was to always show everything in every fight, but I didn’t show up every time, so that is why I’m still here,” Jung wrote on Instagram (translated from Korean).
“I couldn’t prove it in the last fight, and I’m especially disappointed. This is not an excuse for the loss. I just have some regrets. I’m not saying that it wasn’t 100 percent me, but I think it is right to put on a performance that I believe in, so that is why I want one more fight. I can’t set any long-term goals.
“For the time being, one fight… I’ll do it in Seoul. Please hold an event.”
The Volkanovski loss had been the 35-year-old Zombie’s 2nd defeat in his past three fights, having also come off second-best on the scorecards against Brian Ortega by unanimous decision a year-and-a-half ago, and it’s perhaps the fact that both of those losses were so one-sided that may have led to TKZ questioning his future in the sport, in addition to having sustained a lot of punishment over the course of his action-packed career.
That being said, he has still picked up some big wins in recent years, including TKO victories over the likes of Frankie Edgar and Renato Moicano, and a decision victory over Dan Ige last June, and it’s possible another big win next time out could convince him to stick around a little big longer.
