Nathaniel Wood got the better of his fight with Charles Jourdain tonight at UFC Fight Night 209 to emerge with a unanimous decision victory.
Round One:
Missed kick from Wood to start. Sticking jab from Jourdain. Now he tries for a head kick. Straight left from Wood. Another blocked high kick attempt from Jourdain.
Wood with straight punches that come off the guard. They clinch up and Jourdain lands a few knees and punches to the body, but then gets taken down by Wood.
Wood in Jourdain’s full guard here and staying patient. Jourdain eventually shifts over to the cage and scrambles back to his feet, but Wood stays clinched up against the cage.
They separate and go back to striking range. Long punch from Jourdain snaps Wood’s head back. Another nice left hand from Jourdain. Front kick to the body from Wood, but it’s a low blow and forces a very brief stoppage.
Jourdain looks for a kick to the body but eats a punch from Wood and it seems to wobble him for a moment. Wood doesn’t press that opportunity though and Jourdain regains his bearings quickly.
Leg kick from Wood. Jourdain in the clinch but not for long. Left hand for Wood. Jourdain lands a punch of his own.
Jab from Jourdain. He lands a left hand. In close he looks for the uppercut. Another nice flurry for him, but then Wood goes for a counter and presses forward afterwards. Jourdain trying for a flying knee that doesn’t pay off. Combination for Wood before the round ends.
Round Two:
Kick for Jourdain. Nice punch froom Wood. Jourdain with a short flurry in close. Right hand for Hill. Punches and a front kick to the body from Hill.
Hill with a nicely timed leg kick and gets Jourdain down. He’s soon back to his feet though. Jourdain into the clinch with some dirty boxing and then backs out as Hill returns fire.
Low kicks from Wood. He lands to the body. Now it’s Jourdain with a series of punches to the body.
Jourdain with short punches inside and Wood returns the favor and then trips Jourdain to the mat.
Wood patient in full guard again. He lands light punches to the body, but nothing really damaging and the ref opts to stand them up.
Calf kick for Wood. Three-piece combo from Jourdain. Jourdain clinches and lands a quick series of uppercuts.
Left hand for Jourdain. Back to close range work with Jourdain landing a couple of short punches. Straight punch for Hill and then a nice hook behind it.
Push kick from Jourdain. Back into clinch range and Jourdain lands a trip. Hill straight back up and trips Jourdain, who also gets up quickly. Elbow attacks now in the final seconds as they continue to trade blow for blow.
Round Three:
Straight punches from Wood to start the final round. Knee in close from Jourdain. Jourdain into the clinch and punches to the body.
Wood always willing to give him a taste of his own medicine in the clinch and lands a knee.
Wood brings Jourdain down. Jourdain trying to scramble to his knees but Wood keeps him down and goes into full guard. Jourdain drives back to his feet, but Hill remains clinched up and lands a couple of elbow strikes.
Jourdain gets free and goes into the clinch. He tries for a spinning backfist but misses. Hill takes him down again and is back in the guard. He backs out though and Jourdain is quickly up.
Straight left from Hill. INto the clinch they go. Jourdain attempts a spinning body kick but misses. In close again they go trading short punches.
Spinning elbow partially lands for Jourdain. Jourdain lands a knee to the body. Hill with punches to the body. They break from the clinch for a moment and Hill lands a front kick to the body. Uppercut in the clinch from Jourdain.
Jourdain lands another uppercut. Hill tags him with a punch. Another exchange while essentially head-to-head and Jourdain lands a nice hook.
Hill lands one last takedown as the round is coming to an end. We’re headed to the judges for a decision.
Decision:
A competitive scrap then fought with a lot of activity from the clinch, but overall it was Wood who often seemed to have the edge and also was able to get his opponent down and gets some control on top to earn himself a unanimous decision victory (30-27 x2, 29-28).
