Jose Aldo may have lost a step
It is undeniable that Jose Aldo is starting to slow down, having fought 4 times in 2009, but only twice in 2010 and 2011, and a disappointing single fight in 2012. Since winning the title a majority of his wins have come by decision. He looks to be stagnating. This could be attributed to a several different things. He is now successful and comfortable and may have lost some of the burning desire he used to have from his youth. It could be a fact of facing better competition. It is much easier for Chad to look good against Cody McKenzie, Darren Elkins, Clay Guida and Nick Lentz than the elite like Frankie Edgar, Ricardo Lamas, and Chan Sung Jung. Aldo’s last five opponents have a combined loss record of 18 while Chad’s opponents have more than doubled that with 39 losses. Aldo’s camp has also expressed a previous desire to move up to 155 pounds. The weight cuts may be getting harder and harder and taking their toll both physically and mentally. Whatever the cause, it is obvious that he is not the same finisher he once was.
