Top Fight to Watch at UFC 164: Koch and Poirier

We are just hours away from the latest Ultimate Fighting Championship pay-per-view event, UFC 164. The event is headlined the rematch between UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson and the man who beat him in the final WEC event for their lightweight title, Anthony Pettis. Also on the card is the co-main event pitting two former UFC heavyweight champions, Frank Mir and Josh Barnett. While those fights will wow the fans, the one fight that will steal the spotlight will be the featherweight fight between Erik Koch and Dustin Poirier.

Koch is ranked as one of the top fighters in the UFC featherweight division. He was so high that at one point, he was set to fight Jose Aldo for the title, but was forced out of their fight due to an injury. His performance in his first fight after withdrawing from the title fight made many think he wouldn’t have stood a chance against Aldo. He suffered a second round TKO to Ricardo Lamas and is coming into this fight looking for redemption.

Poirier is also entering into this fight with a loss in his most recent fight, a unanimous decision in February against Cub Swanson.  Overall, he is 5-2 in his UFC career and has taken part in many memorable fights including the 2012 Fight of the Year with The Korean Zombie, Chan Sung Jung.

When these two men meet, fans of mixed martial arts will be witness to two fighters that are hungry for a win. Unlike other divisions where two fighters coming into a fight with a loss will be worried about being knocked out, the featherweight division is home to some of the most fearless fighters in the sport. This fight will be the first on the PPV portion of the card and will set the pace for how the rest of the night will go.
