The already stacked UFC 167 event in November has just been bolstered by a big-name heavyweight match-up with Alistair Overeem now lined up to fight Frank Mir.
It’s an intriguing match-up because it comes at a time when both men are going through a rough patch in the Octagon and are each in desperate need of a win.
Mir was TKO’d in the first round by Josh Barnett just a week ago, and is now on a three-fight losing streak having also come up short against both Junior Dos Santos and Daniel Cormier in recent times.
Overeem’s also coming off a first round loss to Travis Browne less than a month ago and that marked his second KO defeat in a row having previously been finished decisively by Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva.
These are two proud fighters who both believe they still have something more to offer in the UFC’s heavyweight division, but even with their impressive resume’s and strong name recognition amongst fans, whoever loses this bout could find themselves in real danger of being cut from the roster.
The UFC appear to be pulling no punches with their line-up for UFC 167 which will be headlined by Georges St.Pierre and Johny Hendricks which in itself would make this a must-see show, but with the likes of Chael Sonnen Vs Rashad Evans, Rory MacDonald Vs Robbie Lawler and now Overeem Vs Mir confirmed it looks like being one of the most star-studded events of the year.
That’s likely to be by design though as the show will also serve as the UFC’s 20th anniversary show so they are eager to ensure that they’ll celebrate that landmark in style.
