Chad Griggs is the latest fighter to make the decision to switch divisions, moving down from heavyweight to light-heavyweight where he’ll face Phil Davis at UFC On FOX 4 on August 4th.
Griggs made his debut in the UFC last month after stringing together a largely unexpected three fight winning streak in the Strikeforce promotion, but found the going tougher in the Octagon, losing by a first round submission to Travis Browne.
At just 228lbs Griggs was clearly light for the division and so it makes sense for him to make the switch down to 205lbs sooner rather than later.
Having said that, Griggs is known more for his toughness and willingness to scrap rather than his technical ability so it’s going to be a challenge for him to get anything from a fight with Davis who’s one of the light-heavyweight division’s rising stars.
Davis is himself coming off a loss to Rashad Evans in the main event of ‘UFC On FOX 3’ back in January, but he’s still very much in the mix at 205lbs and personally I’m a little surprised he’s not been given a more notable opponent here.
