At the UFC 148 media conference call on Monday afternoon a fired-up Anderson Silva may have caught his outspoken rival Chael Sonnen off-guard when he became the one to up the ante in their ongoing war of words by threatening to “break his face and break every one of the teeth in his mouth” and send him packing from the UFC for good.

Sonnen hasn’t wasted long in retaliating though and slung some mud back in Silva’s direction during an interview on the ‘UFC Tonight’s show on Tuesday evening.

“Well it was nice to see the real Anderson Silva come through,” Sonnen said. “Ya know, the guy’s a dirtbag, like I’ve told you for years. He made a lot of statements like, he’s gonna break my teeth, he’s gonna break my jaw and beak my skull. Ya know, I’ve fought 49 men. It’s not as if I’ve never been to the orthodontist before, or my jaw reset or my scalp stapled shut in the ER. There’s a couple things he didn’t say he was gonna do, starting with beating me, starting with breaking my spirit and leaving with the victory, cuz he’s not. Go ahead. Take the the teeth, take the jaw, take the staples in the head, whatever other crap he’s gonna do. We’re in the a fistfight in a steel cage on a Saturday night, anyway. I kind of expect it. I think he was one off from saying, ‘I’m gonna give you a knuckle sandwich.’ I’m kinda sitting there thinking, ‘Well, duh. We’re in the middle of a cage fight, dummy!'”

There’s two school’s of thought on Silva’s rant on Monday. One says that it was good for Sonnen as it proves that he’s got inside Silva’s head, while the other suggests that it’s bad for the challenger as an angry Silva will be even more deadly than usual in the Octagon.

The only way to find out for sure will be to watch the fight when it goes down in a little over a week’s time on July 7th in Las Vegas.
