Give Chael Sonnen his dues – he talks the talk, but he walks the walk too as he’s proved once again by offering to step in at short notice to fight Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua at UFC 161 in less than two weeks time.
“I HEAR BRAZILIAN CHICKEN IS OFF THE MENU,” Sonnen tweeted last night upon hearing that ‘Shogun’s previous opponent Antonio Rogerio Nogueira had pulled out due to an injury. “AMERICAN GANGSTER IS STILL AVAILABLE IF YOU WANT TO SEND YOUR WAITRESS OVER.”
This isn’t the first time Sonnen has offered to step in to a major fight at a moments notice. He also attempted to save the ill-fated UFC 151 event last September by asking to fight Jon Jones after his original headliner fell through only for the light-heavyweight champion to turn him down which lead to the entire show being shelved.
Sonnen is currently on a two-fight losing streak – albeit to the current champions of both the 185 and 205lb divisions – so this is certainly a risky move on his part.
We’ll have to wait and see if his latest offer is accepted, but I’d imagine that under the circumstances the UFC would be delighted to have him on-board.
