A lightweight title showdown between current champion Charles Oliveira and Dustin Poirier is in the works as the headline attraction for UFC 269 on December 11th.
The two had previously been earmarked to go up against each other for the vacant title earlier in the year, but Poirier opted to take on a money-spinning trilogy fight with Conor McGregor instead, and emerged with a first round TKO stoppage when his rival broke his leg.
Meanwhile, Oliviera went up against Michael Chandler and survived a tough first five-minutes, then rebounded in impressive fashion with a TKO finish just 19 seconds into the second round to become the new lightweight champion.
That marked the 31-year-old’s ninth win in a row, during which time he’s shattered several UFC records, including the most submission wins in UFC history (14), most finishes in UFC history (17) and most ‘Performance Of The Night’ bonuses (11).
Poirier’s record is impressive too though as his only loss in his last 10 Octagon outings was in a title fight against dominant former champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, while he holds the record for the most knockouts in UFC lightweight history (8) and is a former interim champ at 155lbs.
Oliveira vs. Poirier would front an end-of-year UFC 269 card that will feature a women’s bantamweight title fight in the co-main event as Amanda Nunes goes up against Julianna Pena, while Cody Garbrandt drops down to flyweight againts Kai Kara-France and Maycee Barber fights Montana De La Rosa.
