Charles Oliveira Vs Nik Lentz Scrapped From UFC Fight Night 50

Just hours before tonight’s UFC Fight Night 50 event in Conneticut it’s emerged that the preliminary card fight between Charles Oliveira and Nik Lentz has been cancelled.

Oliveira failed to make weight by 4lbs at yesterday’s weigh-ins and afterwards blamed a viral infection he had recently been suffering from for his inability to make weight at the first attempt.

‘Do Bronx’ had been given a further three hours to make the weight, but in the end opted not attempt to make the featherweight limit for a second time.

That should have resulted in the fight still going ahead with Oliveira forfeiting 20% of his purse to Lentz, but instead it’s believed that the Brazilian became sick again and after being checked out by a doctor it was decided that for his own safety he shouldn’t fight this evening.

The UFC has been plagued with late call-offs for their shows lately with Oliveira being the third fighter in a week to run into difficulties during their weight cuts resulting in them being unable to compete.

Henry Cejudo was unable to make his UFC debut last week after failing to make the flyweight limit, while UFC 177 headliner Renan Barao was also withdrawn after a tough weight cut led to him passing out and hitting his head.

So, UFC Fight Night 50 now proceeds with just nine fights, including a four fight main card headlined by Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza Vs Gegard Mousasi.

Over the years I've watched the UFC develop into the powerhouse it is today, organizations like PRIDE, Strikeforce and WEC rise and fall, and Bellator emerge as a new force on the MMA landscape. Throughout it all I've remained captivated by the sport and I'm excited to cover what comes next here on MMA Insight.
