Charlie Campbell was able to get the better of Trevor Peek on the feet and on the mat tonight at UFC Fight Night 240 to earn a unanimous decision victory.
Round One:
Inside leg kick for Peek to start. Low kick for Campbell. Thumping calf kick from Campbell. He fires off another couple of kicks, one to the body and one to the leg. Back to the body again.
Slip from Campbell. He gets back up and is right back to work landing a punch and then more kicks.
Another hard calf kick for Campbell had Peek off-balance for a moment. Peek with a kick of his own. Peek pressing forward now and battles his way into the clinch against the cage. He tries for a trip but Campbell stays upright.
Peek able to bring Campbell to the mat nicely and lands a few knees to the body before Campbell gets back to his feet.
Peek wades forward with a few strikes but doesn’t find the target. Another surge forward from him but still coming up short as Campbell backs up.
Now it’s Campbell who lands a combination. A punch connects and then targets the calf again with his solid kicks.
Punch lands for Peek. Campbell is beating up Peek’s calf and lands a punch too. Peek limping a little as he heads back to his corner at the end of the round.
Round Two:
Front kick to the body from Campbell and then a head kick attempt. Peek with a kick. Peek lurching forward with wild hooks but not finding the target.
A brief exchange at close range as Peek tries to turn this into a brawl then there’s a clinch up against the cage.
Striking again and Campbell lands a big uppercut. A couple more strikes land for Campbell. Peek just keeps coming forward though. Peek into the clinch against the cage. He’s working a few knees.
Peek abandons the clinch and charges forward throwing hammerfists, but Campbell steers clear and now works a takedown.
Peek gives up his back. Campbell gradually trying to work his hooks in. Peek eventually able to stand though. Campbell with a right hand. Peek pressing forward and lands a good punch of his own. Campbell trying to work a takedown, but it doesn’t pay off.
Campbell opts to strike and lands a nice right hand. Now a knee for him. Peek now gets his own takedown. Campbell soon back up though and he’s pressing forward on the attack, then ends up in the clinch as the round ends.
Round Three:
Leg kick for Campbell. Peek with a combination and the final punch lands clean. Campbell works a takedown. Peek straight back up and turns Campbell into the cage.
Foot stomp for Peek. Campbell reverses the position but then Peek punches his way back out and lands a takedown. Campbell scrambling and gets on top, then takes Peek’s back. Scramble again and Campbell manages to stay on the back.
Campbell gets the body triangle and starts working to set up the rear-naked choke. Campbell now stepping into mount, but ends up on the back again soon after. Campbell dropping back trying to sink in the choke but it doesn’t work out and Peek is able to scramble back to his feet.
Campbell still his Peek’s back though as he presses him into the cage. With a minute to go Peek is able to break free though.
Campbell able to bring Peek back down again. He gets to side control. Back to half-guard. Punch lands for Campbell. He takes the back again in the final 10 seconds and is starting to sink in the rear-naked choke as the fight comes to a close.
Decision:
A battling back-and-forth fight here as expected then, but the cleaner, more effective striking was coming from Campbell and he got the better of the ground game too, which leads him to a unanimous decision victory (30-27 x3).
