According to Dana White, UFC heavyweight Cheick Kongo has turned down two potential opponents (Daniel Cormier and Roy Nelson) recently, but it appears the fighter is now taking matters into his own hands to get the fight he wants.
Apparently Kongo has decided that he wants to face Stefan Struve and so he’s gone straight to the source to ask for the fight.
“It would be very exciting for the fans & a great challenge for both of us,” Kongo wrote to Struve on Twitter. “Let’s do it!”
And as it turns out, the Dutchman is more than happy to take up that offer, with UFC 156 being the event they hope to line this up for.
“I’m in! Great fight for sure. Let’s see if they got a spot left for us then,” Struve replied.
It’ll be interesting to see if the UFC goes for this. Kongo Vs Struve is a good fight stylistically, but I feel that Struve is currently further up the rankings after his recent four-fight winning streak, and according to Dana White after his last victory he was going to get a top 10 heavyweight next time out which would rule Kongo out. Given his lack of cooperation lately the UFC brass may also not take too kindly to him attempting to arrange a fight without consulting him first.
I’d also put a big question mark over the possibility of this one happening at UFC 156 given that it’s a card that’s already stacked with high profile fights.
