Cody Garbrandt will finally return to action on June 6th after his fight with Raphael Assuncao was rescheduled to take place on that date at a location still to be confirmed.
There’s a lot riding on this fight for the former bantamweight champion Garbrandt as he’s coming off a three-fight losing streak, something that seemed unthinkable when he claimed the title in convincing fashion over Dominick Cruz back in December of 2016.
Following that high point in his career, Garbrandt then lost the belt to his most bitter rival TJ Dillashaw and was also defeated in their subsequent rematch, both by way of TKO, and then an attempt to get back on track against Pedro Munhoz last year also went badly, suffering a first round KO loss.
He hasn’t been handed an easy fight next, though Assuncao is also uncharacteristically coming off a losing streak, having taken back-to-back losses against Marlon Moraes and Cory Sandhagen in 2019.
However, before that Assuncao had lost just once in his previous 12 UFC fights, including wins over the likes of TJ Dillashaw, Marlon Moraes and Aljamain Sterling.
Not much more is known about the June 6th event at this stage, and with the coronavirus situation still ongoing there’s likely to still be uncertainty about the location and other details until closer to fight night.
