Conor McGregor’s horrific accidental leg break at UFC 264 wasn’t the way anyone wanted to see his trilogy fight series with Dustin Poirier end and so there’s now talk of a fourth battle between them, and it appears all the major people involved are on-board.
Remarkably, even as he sat in the Octagon in pain with his lower shin snapped, McGregor still took his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan and was immediately demanding another fight to settle the score.
“This is not over,” McGregor ranted. “If i have to take this outside with him it’s on outside. I don’t give a bollocks.”
Meanwhile, after McGregor hurled insults at his rival’s wife in the cage post-fight, Poirier was more than ready to lock horns with ‘The Notorious’ again.
“We are going to fight again,” Poirier said, “whether it’s in the Octagon or on the sidewalk,” Poirier vowed.
Meanwhile, Dana White also appears to be sold on a fourth fight, though given the fact that McGregor’s leg is going to take a long time to rehab, he expects Poirier to fight lightweight champion Charles Oliveira first.
“It sucks, it’s brutal, it’s not the way you want to see fights end,” was White’s assessment of the outcome.
“Dustin Poirier will fight for the title and when Conor’s healed and ready to go, he’ll do the rematch I guess. I don’t know.”
The freak leg break at the end of the first round somewhat overshadowed the fact that Poirier had gained the upperhand over McGregor in the first five minutes, landing some heavy ground and pound after the fight went to the floor early in the third encounter.
As such, with Poirier now holding two wins over the former champion, he would likely be an even bigger favorite whenever it is that the UFC is able to run this fight back again for a fourth time.
