Cris Cyborg left the UFC seven years ago, but she’s not made a bold pitch to ‘save’ the upcoming UFC 332 event on October 3rd, which is a month away, yet still doesn’t have a headlining fight.
There had been talk that the event in Salt Lake City, Utah was going to be headlined by women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko going up against Natalia Silva, but the rumor this week is that ‘Bullet’ is injured and won’t be available.
If so that leaves the UFC scrambling to find an alternative main event, and so in steps Cyborg with her plan to front the show in a rematch with the woman many people believe to be the female G.O.A.T. of MMA.
“👋 @Amanda_Leoa [Amanda Nunes] tired of waiting for @KaylaH [Kayla Harrison]?” Cyborg wrote to ‘The Lioness’ on X.
“Feel like saving an @ufc event?”
These two stars previously fought at UFC 232 back in 2019, and it didn’t go well at all for Cyborg on that occasion, suffering a 51 second KO loss to Nunes in a featherweight title clash.
Cyborg soon got back to winning ways in the final fight of her UFC deal, and has remained undefeated in the many years since during stints in both the Bellator and PFL promotions, with a unanimous decision win over ex-UFC fighter Ketlen Vieira less than two weeks ago being the 41-year-old’s 10th win in a row.
As for Nunes, she went 6-1 after beating Cyborg, including multiple bantamweight and featherweight title defenses, before retiring in June of 2023.
However, the 38-year-old Nunes indicated her intention to return to the UFC last year to fight current bantamweight champion Kayla Harrison, but has had to wait on the sidelines since due to the champ being injured.
Nunes vs. Cyborg 2 would certainly be a fight worthy of headlining UFC 332, but there’s been no love lost between Dana White and Cyborg over the years, which would likely throw a major spanner in the works.
Meanwhile, Nunes has been adamant she’ll wait as long as it takes to fight Harrison, and likely wouldn’t fancy coming off a three-year layoff on just four weeks notice to fight Cyborg, and might feel like she already settled that score the first time around given the decisive nature of her victory.
Whatever happens, the one thing that’s clear at this stage is that the UFC needs to get a move on with securing a suitable headliner for UFC 332.
