Dana White has cast doubt on fans hopes of seeing one of the biggest lightweight fights of all-time between current champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson in 2020.
The fight has already been made and then cancelled on no less than five occasions in recent years, with the latest booking at UFC 249 having been scrapped after Nurmagomedov was left unable to leave Russia due to the coronavirus pandemic, and it’s left White uneasy about the chances of it finally happening by the end of the year.
“Not very,” White told fans during a Reddit Q&A when asked how confident he was of the fight taking place in 2020. “I’m afraid what will happen if we try to make that fight happen again.”
After Khabib’s latest withdrawal, the UFC forged ahead with a new match-up between Ferguson and Justin Gaethje, and even within the last week White had stated that the winner would fight the champion, potentially in September or October, but when asked by fans during the Q&A for an alternative match-up if that didn’t happen he had something in mind.
“I would have to say Conor [vs.] Khabib,” White said. “Conor wants that rematch so bad and I would love to see it.”
