Billy Ray Goff was handed a beatdown against Ty Miller on the main card of last night’s UFC Fight Night 284 event at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas, and color commentator Daniel Cormier was very critical of the fighter’s corner-work prior to him being TKO’d early in the third round.

Miller had dropped Goff in the second round and was landing at will with his combination work by the end of that five-minute spell, but the referee allowed the fight to continue.

Goff trudged back to his corner looking a beaten man with one eye swelling badly, and if he was hoping his corner had a cunning plan to turn the fight around he was going to be sorely disappointed as there only advice to him was to circle away and not attempt to engage.

That didn’t go according to plan as mere seconds into the final round Miller landed a couple more punches to floor him and earn a TKO finish.

“You could see his orbital bone is broken – look at his eye,” Cormier said on the live broadcast. “Look at his right eye. And then when he got hit on the right eye he went down. The coach told him, ‘Don’t engage, just circle’ and essentially run. Why not just stop the fight? … The writing was on the wall, especially if that’s the advice you’re giving your guy going into the third round.”

That sentiment was echoed by many others watching, and indeed even Ty Miller admitted he was surprised to see Goff come out for the third round.

“I didn’t think he was going to get off the stool, to be honest,” Miller said in his Octagon interview. “I hit him with some hard shots. But I told myself, ‘Don’t do that, don’t think like that.’
