On the latest episode of the ‘UFC Tonight’ show it was revealed that one of the light-heavyweight division’s leading contenders, Daniel Cormier may be set to face Rafael ‘Feijao’ Cavalcante next at UFC 175 in July.
Cormier, the current No.5 ranked contender picked up his first win at 205lbs against the unheralded Pat Cummins at UFC 170 in February, adding to two previous victories at heavyweight in the UFC for the former Strikeforce grand-prix champion.
‘Feijao’ also joined the UFC from Strikeforce where he was at one point their light-heavyweight champion. He lost by knockout to Thiago Silva in his UFC debut last year, but bounced back with a first round stoppage victory against Igor Pokrajac.
Cormier is someone who’s been heavily touted for a potential title shot and potentially could be next in line after Alexander Gustafsson.
With that in mind, ‘Feijao’, who’s currently ranked No.12 in the division, seems like a slightly curious choice. Dan Henderson, who just defeated Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua for a second time and is currently ranked No.6 in the division seems like a better choice for instance, while the No.4 ranked Phil Davis would also make more sense if he can get past Anthony Johnson at UFC 172 in April.
The No.9 ranked Ryan Bader also stands out, especially considering he doesn’t currently have a fight scheduled and is aiming to return from injury in the coming months.
The fight between Cormier and ‘Feijao’ isn’t finalized yet, but if it does go ahead it’s likely to raise a few eyebrows.
