Derrick Lewis TKO’s Shamil Abdurakhimov In Fourth Round At UFC Fight Night 102

Despite a poor performance, Derrick Lewis managed to find a way to win against Shamil Abdurakhimov in the main event of UFC Fight Night 102 this evening, landing a takedown in the fourth round that led to a ground and pound stoppage.

Round One:

The main event of the evening is underway in Albany.

Lewis commanding the center of the Octagon to start. He goes for a head kick, but Abdurakhimov ducks under and lands an early takedown.

Abdurakhimov in side control in the middle of the Octagon and he’s immediately working an Americana submission then transitions to the kimura. Lewis escapes though and then stands.

Abdurakhimov stays in the clinch though and walks Lewis over to the cage. Lewis defends a takedown attempt. Abdurakhimov with a knee to the thigh. A couple more land.

Mid-way point in the round and not a whole lot happening, so Abdurakhimov opts to back out of the clinch. Lewis missing with a front kick to the face.

90 seconds of the roudn remaining. Right hand for Lewis and then goes into the clinch, but Abdurakhimov reverses the position against the cage.

More knee strikes from Abdurakhimov then he moves away again. Solid leg kick for Lewis, but Abdurakhimov catches that, walks him across the Octagon and dumps Lewis on his back.

Abdurakhimov able to get to full mount close to the cage, but isn’t able to do anything with it before time in the round runs out.

Round Two:

Both men looking to exchange at the start of the second, but then opt to clinch up. Big knee to the body from Lewis, but Abdurakhimov presses him up against the cage.

Lewis appeared to be poked in the eye, but has to get on with it in the clinch regardless. He stuffs a takedown and then soon after the referee separates them.

Big winging right hand from Lewis, but that was telegraphed and allows Abdurakhimov to clinch up and press his opponent to the cage.

No real action from there though and they go back to striking range. Lewis with a head kick, but doesn’t connect and slips as he does so.

Body kick for Lewis, but Abdurakhimov catches it again and puts him on his back. The kicks just aren’t working for Lewis in this fight.

Abdurakhimov in his opponent’s guard and landing some punches to the body. Albany crowd very restless here. Lewis suddenly transitions into a leg lock. Abdurakhimov survives that, but it allows Lewis to stand back up.

Abdurakhimov still has a hold of a leg here, but Lewis lands some punches until he’s taken down again and that’s the last meaningful action of the round.

Round Three:

Lewis with a body kick, but it’s caught yet again. However, this time Abdurakhimov’z takedown doesn’t pay off and Lewis gets right back up.

Lewis comes forward and lands a hard uppercut. More punches like that could help change the momentum of this fight. Abdurakhimov looking more cautious now as Lewis lands a few more punches.

Missed punch from Lewis and a lunging right hand in return from Abdurakhimov. Lewis with an elbow strike. Lewis decides to clinch up and pushes his opponent to the cage, but his attempt at a takedown fails and they go back to striking range.

Spinning backfist and winging strikes from Lewis don’t land and Abdurakhimov puts him on his back again with another takedown.

Abdurakhimov thinks about a submission, but then decides not to and settles into Lewis’s full guard. Nothing happening here and eventually the ref decides to stand them back up in the final minute of the round.

Lewis plodding forward and Abdurakhimov is constantly keeping his distance, so referee Dan Miragliotta decides to stop the fight and have Abdurakhimov’s corner translate to him that he needs to fight or he’ll deduct a point.

They get back to the action, or lackthereof, with not much hapenning in the remaining seconds of the round.

Round Four:

Abdurakhimov with a leg kick as he circles on the outside. Lewis misses with a punch and Abdurakhimov lands a counter hook.

Lewis with a head kick attempt and for the umpteenth time in the fight Abdurakhimov catches it and uses that to dump him to the mat.

Back up he gets though and it’s not long before they are back to striking range. Lewis lands a nice uppercut, but then Abdurakhimov stifles him in the clinch against the cage.

Elbow from Abdurakhimov as he backs away. Plodding lethargic looking fighters in there, and then Lewis briefly bursts to life with a few punches.

Another lull in the action and then Lewis lands a nice knee to the belly as Abdurakhimov comes in.

Lewis into the clinch and for the first time he’s able to land a takedown. Immediately Lewis gets to work, dropping down some big punches close to the cage.

Lewis able to get into full mount and lands some bombs. Abdurakhimov is just exhausted and doesn’t seem to have anything left to fight him off, so the ref steps in and brings an end to the contest.

This was a very poor fight, but nonetheless Lewis managed to gut it out and emerge with a TKO victory at 3.42mins of the fourth round.
