Diego Sanchez Claims Food Poisoning Affected His Performance At UFC 171

Diego Sanchez lost out by unanimous decision to Myles Jury at UFC 171 this past weekend and then blamed food poisoning the night before the fight for his performance.

“I wasn’t my self last night I sustained Food poisoning from eating a beef tar tar with raw quail egg as a appetizer at dinner,” Sanchez explained in the first of a series of post-fight messages on Twitter. “This was my own mistake I ordered it thinking I need red meat but raw was the wrong choice, I threw up first at at 2am & all day fight day.

“This was not part of @TheDolceDiet I screwed my self! I thought because I had done everything do perfect I could sway a little & it cost me. I was weak and my performance showed it if you notice I don’t go for one takedown because I just didn’t have the strength.

“Jury and his team fought a good fight against me and they did win, but I wanted my fans to know the truth why I was not all there. Take what you want from it it is the truth. I made a horrible choice and it’s no ones fault but mine.

“Yea people gonna talk shit I know but I wanted my fans the ones who care and could see I was not myself why I was not my self.”

Despite his illness, Sanchez pretty much fought the kind of fight that we’ve seen from him regularly over the past few years. He repeatedly charged forward with little regard for his own health, but despite throwing a lot of strikes not many were landing and Jury was able to comfortably deal with him with assured, technical striking from range.

Sanchez has now lost three of his last four fights at the age of 32, after being involved in a number of wars over the years, there’s a real concern that the former TUF Season 1 winner’s best days may now be behind him in the Octagon.

Over the years I've watched the UFC develop into the powerhouse it is today, organizations like PRIDE, Strikeforce and WEC rise and fall, and Bellator emerge as a new force on the MMA landscape. Throughout it all I've remained captivated by the sport and I'm excited to cover what comes next here on MMA Insight.
