Diego Sanchez will drop down to the UFC’s featherweight division for his next fight against Ricardo Lamas at the TUF: Latin America 2 finale in Mexico on November 21st.
Sanchez first arrived in the UFC via TUF season 1 where he became the first ever ‘Ultimate Fighter’ competing in the middleweight division. Since then he’s competed frequently at both welterweight and lightweight where he’s most recently been plying his trade.
It’s an interesting decision for Sanchez to go down yet another division as he’s complained in the past about difficulties with dropping down to 155lbs, and indeed even missed weight a couple of years ago for a fight against Takanori Gomi.
It seems that the 33 year-old is looking for a fresh start though after only picking up one victory in his last three Octagon outings, and that coming by way of a very controversial split decision verdict against Ross Pearson despite almost everyone apart from the judges believing that Sanchez lost that bout.
Sanchez isn’t being given an easy assignment for his first 145lb bout as Lamas is a former title contender who’s defeated some serious competition in the course of his UFC career to date.
Lamas is coming off a TKO loss against Chad Mendes though, so this is his opportunity to get back to winning ways and claim a big-name scalp in the process.
The TUF Latin America 2 Finale line-up is coming along nicely with Sanchez Vs Lamas joining the previously announced Matt Brown Vs Kelvin Gastelum headliner and Efrain Escudero Vs Leandro Silva on the card.
