Injury-jinxed bantamweight star Dominick Cruz has revealed that he is going to be out of action for a year due to a shoulder injury that forced him out of a fight with John Lineker at UFC 233 next month.
“It’s basically an ACL of the shoulder,” Cruz told Ariel Helwani on his ESPN show, going on to reveal that he had torn two ligaments in his right shoulder while sparring.
Cruz has already been out of action since December of 2016 when he lost his bantamweight title to Cody Garbrandt by unanimous decision.
Prior to that Cruz had remained undefeated for 13 fights through his time in the WEC and then in the UFC, defeating the likes of Urijah Faber (twice) Joseph Benavidez, TJ Dillashaw and Demetrious Johnson along the way.
However, he also suffered career-threatening injuries during that time and has spent almost three years on the sidelines before, so another extended layoff is nothing knew for ‘The Dominator’ who these days also works as a color commentator for the UFC and analyst for FOX.
“It’s just part of my journey, and it’s going to be part of my legacy, these injuries,” Cruz said.
And the 33-year-old also ruled out any chance that he’d just consider retiring from the sport.
“Exactly when you quit in sports is exactly when you quit in life.”
