Another major title fight appears to be in the works for UFC 207: Nunes Vs Rousey, with bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz Vs Cody Garbrandt also reported to have been targeted for the Las Vegas end of year show on December 30th.
That’s the word according to MMAfighting.com’s Ariel Helwani, though the UFC have yet to confirm the match-up.
If it proves to be true then this would be Cruz’s third fight of 2016 – a remarkable achievement when you consider that prior to that the 31 year-old had fought just once in over four years due to a seemingly never-ending battle with potentially career-ending injuries.
The fact that after all that Cruz has been able to fight as well as he has is nothing short of astonishing, having defeated TJ Dillashaw back in January at UFC Fight Night 81 to win back the belt he was forced to vacate in 2014, and then going on to beat his bitter rival Urijah Faber in their trilogy fight at UFC 199 in June.
As for Garbrandt, he’s another product of Faber’s ‘Team Alpha Male’ gym and has been terrorizing the bantamweight division of late with five wins in a row, taking his overall pro-record to a perfect 10-0.
Along the way he’s defeated the likes of Marcus Brimage, Thomas Almeida and Takeya Mizugaki, and he holds a formidable finishing record, with nine of his ten career fights ending by way of strikes.
When it’s made official, the addition of the Cruz Vs Garbrandt in the co-main event spot would make UFC 207 a fitting end to a hugely successful year for the promotion, with Ronda Rousey set to fight for the woman’s bantamweight title against Amanda Nunes in the main event, while former heavyweight champions Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum are also set to rematch on the pay-per-view main card.
