Donald Cerrone has a new opponent for UFC 205 in New York City on November 12th after Robbie Lawler pulled out of their orginally scheduled fight.
Cerrone will now fight former TUF winner Kelvin Gastelum, who the UFC have opted to remove from his upcoming bout with Jorge Masvidal at the TUF: Latin America 3 Finale on November 5th in order to line him up for this higher profile match-up.
Cerrone is enjoying an impressive run of form since moving up to welterweight earlier this year, earning stoppage victories against Alex Oliveira, Patrick Cote and Rick Story so far.
Now ‘Cowboy’ will fight a top 5 ranked 170lb contender in Gastelum, who is coming off his biggest win to date over former champion Johny Hendricks at UFC 200 in July.
Though Gastelum presents a significantly different challenge stylistically for the No.7 ranked Cerrone, it still remains his toughest test to date in the weight class.
Spare a thought for Masvidal on all this though, as he’s responded to the news that he’s no longer fighting Gastelum by telling MMAfighting.com, “it breaks my heart, you know. I really wanted to put on a fight with a ranked guy.”
Cerrone Vs Gastelum joins a UFC 205 fight card that so far also includes the likes of Rashad Evans Vs Tim Kennedy and Thiago Alves Vs Al Iaquinta, with more high profile bouts expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
