Former lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez is set to fight Dustin Poirier at UFC 211 on May 13th in Dallas, Texas.
Alvarez won the 155lb title last year after back-to-back wins over Gilbert Melendez and Anthony Pettis led to a title shot against Rafael dos Anjos, who he defeated by TKO in the first round.
‘The Underground King’ then landed a money-spinning title fight with Conor McGregor at UFC 205, which granted the veteran fighter his first seven-figure payday, but saw him TKO’d in the second round.
Now Alvarez is looking to get back in the saddle and had originally hoped to face Nate Diaz, but when he turned the fight down Poirier was drafted in as his opponent instead.
Currently ranked No.10 in the division, Poirier is coming off a ‘Fight of The Night’ majority decision win over Jim Miller last month at UFC 208.
In total Porier has won five of his past six fights since moving back to lightweight in April of 2015 after a lengthy stint at featherweight.
Alvarez Vs Porier is a welcome addition to a UFC 211 card that’s set to be headlined by a heavyweight title fight between Stipe Miocic and Junior dos Santos, while a second title fight between current woman’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzeczyk and Jessica Andrade takes the co-main event spot.
