A new rumor suggests that a heavyweight clash between veteran campaigners Fabricio Werdum and Aleksei Oliynyk could take place at the UFC’s first ever ‘Fight Night’ event in Russia on September 15th.
That’s the word according to Ariel Helwani, who reports on Twitter that the match-up is being “seriously considered as a top fight for the UFC’s debut event in Moscow,” thought at this stage nothing is finalized.
Talk of the fight first emerged when the 40-year-old Ukranian-Russian Oliynyk called for a fight with Werdum following his ezekiel choke victory over Junior Albini at UFC 224 earlier this month.
That victory took ‘The Boa Constrictor’s’ UFC record to 5-2, including other big wins over the likes of Travis Browne, viktor Peska, Jared Rosholt and Anthony Hamilton – with all but one coming by way of submission.
As for also 40-year-old Werdum, he is coming off a KO loss to another Russian fighter Alexander Volkov in Elgand back in March, which came after back-to-back wins over Walt Harris and Marcin Tybura.
In total, Werdum has now compiled a 3-2 record since losing the heavyweight title by KO to Stipe Miocic back in 2016, leaving him ranked No.5 in the division, while Oliynyk has risen to No.10.
