UFC heavyweight kingpin Francis Ngannou and boxing world champion Tyson Fury have been trading verbal jabs this week over talk of a potential superfight between them.
It all sparked off when Ngannou was asked by TMZ Sports last week whether he would be interested in competing in a boxing match
“Absolutely,” Ngannou responded. “I’m open to that. Remember: Boxing was my primary dream, and I still have the fire, the dream inside me, and I believe at some point I’m gonna make a step.
“I don’t want to fight Mike Tyson, but I would like to fight another heavyweight boxer such as Tyson Fury.”
Fury has since caught wind of Ngannou’s comment and has now indicated he’d be more than willing to fight the UFC star, who has been getting coached in the art of boxing by none other than Mike Tyson.
“@Mike Tyson, after I smash Anthony Joshua, I’ll roast that guy also,” Fury wrote. “Francis Ngannou easy work.”
However, although Fury holds a formidable 30-0-1 career record, KO specialist Ngannou clearly believes he’s the man to end the boxing ace’s unbeaten run.
“If this guy did this to you, what do you think I would do? [🤔]” Ngannou replied alongside a photo of a crimson-covered Fury following a unanimous decision win against Otto Wallin in 2019.
It’s unlikely that this fight will happen any time soon though as Dana White will be eager to have Ngannou continue to focus on his Octagon exploits instead after seizing the title in devastating fashion from Stipe Miocic last time out.
A rematach with Derrick Lewis appears to be the frontrunner for Ngannou next, while a massive fight with Jon Jones is still a mouth-watering prospect for the future if the UFC can stomach the astronomical sums the former light-heavyweight champion has in mind.
