Tonight the UFC made Georges St.Pierre next fight official, and as expected he will indeed defend his welterweight title against Nick Diaz.
The grudge match will serve as the main event at UFC 158 on March 16th in Montreal, Canada.
There had been much talk about GSP fighting Anderson Silva next, but the Canadian star spoke with UFC president Dana White and requested that he give him the opportunity to fight Diaz who he had originally been scheduled to fight last year before a series of incidents transpired to prevent it from happening.
White granted his wish and so Diaz will walk straight into a title fight despite having lost to Carlos Condit in his last fight and having served a year’s suspension after testing positive for marijuana metabolites following the bout.
UFC 158 will also play host to two other major welterweight encounters.
First up Rory MacDonald will look to avenge a loss to the aforementioned Condit, while Johny Hendricks, who many believed had earned the right to be GSP’s next opponent after a five fight winning streak will now face Jake Ellenberger .
