Dana White revealed today after the ‘UFC On FOX 5’ pre-fight press conference that he plans to put Georges St.Pierre up against Nick Diaz next, putting an end to the speculation regarding who the welterweight champion’s next opponent will be.
Speaking with MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani, White said that GSP specifically asked him for the Diaz fight, and that given all that the Canadian superstar has done for the company he couldn’t turn him down.
Having said that, it’s worth noting that White says he hasn’t even had a chance to tell Diaz yet, but given that the Stockton native has been campaigning for a shot at the title it’s a safe to say he’ll jump at the chance.
Of course this means that a much-talked about superfight between GSP and Anderson Silva is now off the table, at least for the time being.
Also spare a thought for Johny Hendricks who should by all accounts be the next man to face the champ after racking up five straight wins in the division against some of the best talent the division has to offer.
Diaz on the other hand is coming off an admittedly close decision loss to Carlos Condit and has spent a year on the sidelines after testing positive for marijuana metabolites after the event.
Nevertheless, this is the bigger fight of the two, and in fairness, if all had gone according to plan GSP Vs Diaz would have taken place last year, so there’s certainly unfinished business here, and bad blood has continued between the two since which means that in certain respects there’s more heat behind this one than there was previously.
