Gunnar Nelson Submits Omari Akhmedov At UFC Fight Night 37

Gunnar Nelson put in an assured performance on the mat tonightat UFC Fight Night 37, controlling the action before tapping out Omari Akhmedov late in the first round.

Round One:

We’re underway with a touch of the gloves and Akhmedov lands an early body kick. He lands a solid leg kick soon after.

The two exchange leg kicks at the same time. Nelson pressuring, but Akhmedov fires off a few hooks. Akhmedov with another leg kick and Nelson almost catches it.

Again Nelson pushes forward and Akhmedov misses with a couple of straight punches. Nelson closes the distance, lands a solid punch that seems to hurt his opponent, then continues the momentum by landing a takedown.

Nelson in full mount now and with plenty of time to work with half the round remaining. He lands a few elbows and Akhmedov is struggling to get him off.

More solid elbow strikes connect. Akhmedov almost gets him back into his guard and that results in Nelson changing things up, electing to move back momentarily, then transition to side control.

Akhmedov tries to get up and immediately Nelson sinks in a guillotine choke and drops back with it, forcing an almost immediate tap with 4.36mins on the clock!

Nelson looked very strong on the ground there and notches up another Octagon win on his record and continues to progress up the welterweight ladder.
