There’s been some speculation about who double-champion Henry Cejudo will fight next lately and so Dana White has finally come out and clarified what’s in store for him.
The likes of Aljamain Sterling, Peter Yan and even Urijah Faber have been queuing up for a shot at Cejudo’s bantamweight title, but White revealed that ‘The Messenger’ will be heading back down to flyweight instead.
“Joe (Benavidez), yeah,” White confirmed to TMZ Sports as Cejduo’s next opponent. “Next he should defend that title. He would go to 125, defend that title, then we would decide who he fights next. As long as Cejudo is willing to defend both titles, I think he is a guy who can carry both of them, both divisions.”
That’s good news for the flyweight division, which has been on rocky ground in recent times, with it being heavily rumored that it was on the verge of being scrapped altogether.
However, Cejudo’s emergence as a star at both 125lbs and 135lbs appears after defeating the likes of Urijah Faber, TJ Dillashaw and Marlon Moraes appears to have breathed new life into the weight class.
It’s also good news for Benavidez, who was in fine form last time out against Jussier Formiga late last month, finishing him with a second round head kick TKO.
That was Benavidez’s third win in a row, and with nine wins in his last 10 fights that makes him the clear No.1 contender in the division.
The fight won’t be happening any time soon though as Cejudo is now likely to be out for the remainder of the year recovering from shoulder surgery.
