If Jon Jones Returns He Could Fight Anthony Johnson Next

Jon Jones future remains uncertain after a failed drug test prior to UFC 200, but there are positive signs that he may escape a lengthy suspension, and if so, UFC President Dana White has an idea of who he might fight next.

“I’m in a weird place,” White said on the latest episode of the ‘UFC Unfiltered’ podcast. “We saw that fight, and it was a great fight. I’ve still got to talk to (UFC matchmaker) Joe Silva and see what he thinks. But I’m thinking maybe we do Anthony Johnson vs. Jon Jones to see who gets to fight Daniel Cormier.”

White confirmed that “things are looking good” for Jones with regards to his drug test, though he didn’t go into the specifics, and the current interim light-heavyweight champion still has to deal with the Nevada State Athletic Commission before he’d be able to return.

Meanwhile, ‘Rumble’ impressed everyone in the co-main event of UFC 202 on Saturday night with his 13 second knockout of Glover Teixeira, and he’s now on a three fight winning streak, in addition to posting an overall 5-1 record since returning to the UFC in 2014.

Jones Vs Johnson is a stylistic match-up that many fans have been clamoring to see for some time now, so if ‘Bones’ can get his ship in order in time, this would seem to be the kind of high-profile match-up that could have a chance to feature on the main card of the must-see UFC 205 event at Madison Square Garden in New York City on November 12th.

It remains to be seen if that would be an arrangement that would suit current champion Daniel Cormier however, since it would leave him sitting on the sidelines for an extended period of time.
